As you know, Seafood Season is upon us and many fast food restaurants from all around are bringing back their seafood options for people to try. One of which is McDonald’s, which recently just brought back their popular Double Filet-O-Fish Sandwich!
And as you know, McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish is actually one of their most popular items. But seeing as how they have also brought back the Double Filet-O-Fish version actually made so many people even more happy.
After all, who doesn’t want more fish patties in their sandwich?
And being as how the Double Filet-O-Fish Sandwich is only going to be around for a limited time only, we decided to go try it out and do a Food Review on it.
Now me personally, I have tried the sandwich in my own spare time many years ago, but seeing as how it’s been awhile, I want to see if it still remained the same or if McDonald’s changed it.
So if you’re ready, lets go review the Double Filet-O-Fish Sandwich!
What Is McDonald’s Double Filet-O-Fish
For those who don’t know, McDonald’s Double Filet-O-Fish is basically their more elevated and enhanced version of their iconic Filet-O-Fish Sandwich.
The Double Filet-O-Fish Sandwich consists of two delicious crispy fish filet patty that is made from wild-caught Alaskan Pollock. It is paired with some melty American cheese and is topped with the brand’s famous tartar sauce. All of which is put in between a soft, steamed bun before serving.
Seeing as how this is, you can definitely expect it to give off a strong seafood flavor.
But lets see if its as good as I remembered it to be!
Buying McDonald’s Double Filet-O-Fish
Upon seeing the news that McDonald’s has brought back the Double Filet-O-Fish Sandwich, I decided that I wanted to do a review on it.
So I hopped in my car and drove to the nearest McDonald’s, which fortunately for me was only a few blocks away. I decided to get into the drive-thru lane because there was no cars in front of me, so it would seem like the fastest option.
Once I got to the speaker, I could see the menu screen in front of me displaying various items that the store sells. And just as I expected, it also had the seafood choices as well displaying both the Filet-O-Fish and also the Double Filet-O-Fish in a big picture taking half the screen.
I was actually happy to see this because I was worried that my local McDonald’s wouldn’t carry it in stock. But good thing they did!
So I placed an order for a Double Filet-O-Fish and drove to the window to pay. Price point wise, it came out to around $5.69 before tax, which doesn’t seem like that bad of a price for a more elevated version of the regular sandwich.
Anyways, I waited for around 5 minutes before they handed me my bag and it was time to do the review!
What Does McDonald’s Double Filet-O-Fish Look Like
Taking the item out of the bag, I noticed it came in a special box that was actually designed in a seafood oriented way. The box itself said “Filet-O-Fish” while also having what I assumed to be blue waves flowing all around the box.
And let me tell you, I could already smell the delicious seafood flavors seeping out of the box.
After I opened the box, I saw the item that I was here for.
It was actually a lot bigger than I remembered.
Bun itself felt nice and soft and it was glossy too. Plus I could see two giant pieces of fish filets sandwiched between the buns as well as a half slice of cheese that wasn’t really melted all the way.
But what I did like was that they were actually really generous with the tartar sauce.
Like that sauce was slathered beautifully all over with some even dripping out of the bun onto the box.
Overall, it felt like a well constructed sandwich as everything looked good. Nothing was overcooked or anything and it felt like a typical item that McDonald’s would serve.
Anyways, I’m getting hungry so lets go try the sandwich!
What Does McDonald’s Double Filet-O-Fish Taste Like
Grabbing the Double Filet-O-Fish Sandwich, I realized that it was actually a pretty heavy sandwich. Like this thing actually had some weight to it.
I then decided to take a big bite, and oh boy was that a mistake.
When I say this thing was piping hot, I mean it!
They definitely made this fresh and it was not sitting around going stale. The amount of steam that was coming from my mouth with this bite made me feel as if I was a dragon about to breathe fire. I actually had to wait a few seconds for it to cool down before swallowing it.
But in those few seconds, I could actually feel that this sandwich was indeed just as good as I remembered.
It was very flavorful and worked nicely together with all the ingredients.
Bun itself was so soft and pillowy, while the cheese was nice and mild.
But the star of the show was definitely the two pieces of fish filets. They were extremely crispy on the outside while also being delicate and flaky on the inside. Texture wise, it was an amazing piece of item.
However, I noticed that the filets themselves, actually didn’t have much flavor to it. In fact, it almost felt neutral. I don’t actually think McDonald’s seasons their fish patties as it didn’t really have any salty sensations, peppery feels or anything like that. Just felt like a plain fish filet.
The good thing however is that because McDonald’s put so much tartar sauce onto this sandwich, it actually gave it all the flavor you can ever need.
Tartar sauce itself was creamy and smooth while having a good amount of acidity and tang to it. Even if the fish filets didn’t have any flavor, the amount of tartar sauce here definitely gave it that missing piece which made it so much better.
And when you tie everything together, it’s actually a pretty tasting sandwich. Although the flavor is mostly coming from the sauce, it did taste pretty good. I would definitely come back and get it again!
How Can McDonald’s Double Filet-O-Fish Be Improved
The way that I see it, McDonald’s Double Filet-O-Fish Sandwich is actually a pretty good item. However, I feel like the fish filets themselves aren’t really the star of the sandwich. It’s actually the tartar sauce, and I think McDonald’s knows this. Which is why they probably put so much of it onto the sandwich.
I mean, don’t get me wrong, the fish sandwich is very good.
But I think if McDonald’s actually decided to season their fish filets, the sandwich could actually be so much better.
Because at this moment, you’re mostly just eating the sauce for the flavor and not really the fish filets. But if they ever decide to season the filets with some pepper, cayenne, onion powder or anything else, it can definitely elevate the sandwich even more.
Either way, good job McDonald’s!
Overall Thoughts
With that being said, McDonald’s Double Filet-O-Fish Sandwich is definitely an interesting item to have. It is designed decently well and actually tastes quite good.
If you’re a fan of their regular Filet-O-Fish Sandwich, then I think you would definitely like the Double Filet-O-Fish Sandwich as well. It’s basically the same thing, but with more crisp, more crunch, and more fish as well.
McDonald’s did a good job in making this item, and hopefully it keeps coming back to the menu for everyone to buy.
