Just at the beginning of February, a lot of fast food locations have started promoting their fish sandwiches.
Popeyes is no stranger to this game as they are also getting ready to bring out a few seafood options for the customers.
The timing is quite great as Lent has just started and these seafood options will be perfect for just about everyone.
The one item I am mostly looking forward to is Popeyes Classic Flounder Fish Sandwich.
This sandwich will offer customers a Flounder filet that is marinated with their Louisiana herbs and spices, which is then coated with their southern blend and fried to perfection.
The fillet will be accompanied by some tartar sauce, a few barrel cut pickles, and all this goodness will be encased between two toasted brioche buns.
I am getting hungry just thinking about it, so let us go get our hands on one of these!
Buying Popeyes Classic Flounder Fish Sandwich
There are multiple ways on how you can get your hands on Popeyes Classic Flounder Fish Sandwich such as ordering through Uber eats or DoorDash delivery services, simply placing the order on your mobile app, or ordering it in person at one of the participating locations.
Normally I would’ve placed my order on the app to simply pick up from the drive-thru but the app was not functioning properly so I just had to just drive to the store.
Upon arriving at the store, I found out that only the drive-thru was open and of-course there were 12 cars already in line. Finally after waiting in line for 25 minutes it was my turn to place my order.
I had ordered just the flounder fish sandwich by itself so my total with tax came out to $6.48. By the time my order was ready, it had been a ridiculous 35 minutes.
Now let’s go home and see if the long wait was worth it.
How Did Popeyes Classic Flounder Fish Sandwich Look Like
By the time I got home and opened the bag I was slightly skeptical as the foil bag it was originally in looked like an oversize bag. I opened the foil bag and I was quite surprised as this sandwich was pretty big!
I mean Popeyes Classic Flounder Fish Sandwich was easily the size of my palm.
The top brioche bun looked like it was slightly pressed in, but that was okay because it still looked pretty plump and fluffy.
One statement that is a fact about Popeyes, is that they do not not skimp out on the meat portions they serve in their sandwiches.
This flounder sandwich is a perfect example of this because you can see three even layers. Two of the layers represent the brioche buns and in the center, is the Flounder fish fillet.
I lifted up the top bun and you could see underneath the bun was very nicely toasted and very likely buttered up.
On the brioche bun, as well as on the flounder fish fillet, there was a relatively thin amount of tartar sauce.
I personally would’ve liked to have a bit more of the tartar sauce on my sandwich, but I think it is safer for them to be under and for the consumer like me to be able to add however much sauce I want.
There were also a few pickles to help balance the overall flavors of the sandwich.
After seeing everything I was very much looking forward to that first bite to see how this tastes.
How Does Popeyes Classic Flounder Fish Sandwich taste?
Even before you can get a first bite from the Popeyes Classic Flounder Fish Sandwich you are immediately hit by the aroma coming from its seasoning.
I decided to take a pretty decent first bite and oh my goodness it was absolutely amazing.
The brioche bun was still warm, and even though it was pressed in slightly, it was still very soft and fluffy.
Also, I’m guessing they might’ve used a little bit of butter as I could definitely taste a hint of it while biting through the brioche bun.
Right after that, you get a very good sensation of flavors coming from their tartar sauce.
As I mentioned before, it is much more preferred that they use a little less sauce as opposed to dousing the fish fillet in tartar sauce completely overpowering any other flavors.
Normally I would’ve added a bit more tartar sauce on my fish fillet sandwich, but the flavors seem to be so perfectly in sync that nothing necessarily needed to be adjusted.
Popeyes is known for their seasoning across all their items and this flounder fish fillet is no exception.
As I bit into the fillet, I could taste all of that great seasoning in the breading that was used to coat the fish.
The breading on the filet seemed a little thicker than what I have seen in other places such as Arby’s, but this might be an exception given how many herbs and spices are used by Popeyes in their breading batter.
Some of the main flavors that popped out from the fish fillet were slightly tangy, mild heat from the spices, and possibly cayenne? The fish that was used was cooked so perfectly as it was very soft and flaky.
Besides the sauce, all good sandwiches need a closing component which has a little bit of acidity or tartness.
For this sandwich, the barrel cut pickles were the perfect addition, as they had a nice crunchy texture and tartnes.
There’s a first time for everything and apparently when I was taking the last two bites, I could feel a small fish bone in my mouth. I carefully took it out to make sure not to swallow it, but I was still surprised as that had never happened to me before.
There were a lot of great components in this dish and it was one of the best sandwiches I had eaten.
How Can Popeyes Classic Flounder Fish Sandwich Be Improved?
Popeyes Classic Flounder Fish Sandwich is definitely delicious with its current components and flavor profile.
I feel this could possibly be slightly enhanced or upgraded by adding one more acidic component. Maybe a slice or two of tomatoes would do the job?
Normally there’s always something going on with sandwiches whether it’s the batter, the sauce, portion size, seasoning or other elements that can be improved. This time around I literally do not have anything significant that can be done to improve this sandwich.
Overall thoughts
Popeyes Classic Flounder Fish Sandwich is quite possibly the best fish fillet sandwich I have had over the last couple of years.
I mean it even surpasses Arby’s fish sandwich that I had praised so much. Perhaps the only thing that can possibly top this would be the spicy version of the sandwich?
I may give that a try as well but I would absolutely recommend Popeyes Classic Flounder Fish Sandwich to all fish sandwich lovers and just about anyone who is curious to try it out.
Overall Score: 9.5
