McDonald’s has just released two new sauces for people to try, being the new Mambo Sauce and the new Sweet & Spicy Jam Sauce.
Now seeing as how McDonald’s rarely releases new items, especially sauces, you know this is going to be a big deal.
After all, the last time they had a new sauce out was I believe for the “BTS Promotion”, where they brought a special sauce from Asia over here for us Westerners to enjoy. But after that, we didn’t get any new sauces for quite some time.
Which is why, I am very excited to try out these new sauces.
Earlier, I tried the new Mambo Sauce from McDonalds, and that was absolutely amazing.
So now, I want to try the new Sweet & Spicy Jam Sauce from McDonalds and see just how it compares with everything else.
Let’s go get our sauce!
Buying Sweet & Spicy Jam Sauce
Heading to my nearest McDonald’s location, I could see that there was already a line of people in the drive-thru waiting to order there foods.
And from the looks of it, they are also getting the new sauces as I can see the menu items being listed on the screen when they are ordering.
So this definitely got me happy as I know I am not the only one curious about these sauces.
My turn soon came and I placed an order for a 10 piece Chicken McNugget Combo, which came with a side and a drink. It also comes with your choice of 2 sauces, so you know I had to get the Sweet & Spicy Jam Sauce.
Now if you want additional sauces it will be $0.25 cents extra for each additional sauce.
Anyways, after placing the order I went up to the window and paid my money, then waited around 2 minutes before they gave me my food.
And just like before, I had to take a look inside the bag to see if they gave me my items correctly as you know McDonalds sometimes has mistakes.
But good thing everything was there.
So now I am excited and it’s time to do the review!
What Does Sweet & Spicy Jam Sauce Look Like
I reached inside of my McDonalds bag and grabbed the new Sweet & Spicy Jam Sauce.
From what I can tell, the Packaging was very similar to that of the new Mambo Sauce from McDonalds.
The front seal had a very vibrant purple color with the words “Sweet & Spicy Jam” written in big bold letters across the top. There was also a red fire logo and also a purple heart in the middle for the picture.
Not really sure what that picture means, maybe its saying its going to be super spicy for the heart? Not sure, but it was definitely pretty interesting to see.
I then lifted the seal to take a look at the sauce, and immediately I was hit with a whiff of peppers and spice going to my nose.
It wasn’t bad, but it was pretty strong.
If you’re familiar with Szechuan Peppercorn, then you’ll know the feeling. It had that exact same smell that lingers around for awhile, so I am assuming this is going to be super spicy.
Inside the sauce, you could even see bits of pepper flakes floating around.
The Sweet & Spicy Jam Sauce was also a very thick consistency. Doesn’t really look like Jam in my opinion, but who knows, it might just be a different version of Jam that I’m not used to.
Either way, it looked good and smelled interesting.
I wanted to try it immediately.
So lets get into it!
What Does Sweet & Spicy Jam Sauce Taste Like
First thing I did was to grab a piece of the Chicken McNugget and dipped it into the sauce.
As I was dipping, I noticed that the sauce itself was very sticky and thick in nature.
But that was a good thing, as I loved when sauces stick to the item your using it with. This means that when your eating it, you’ll get a good mouthful of the sauce without it having to be falling off.
I took one bite and was thrown back to memory lane.
The new Sweet & Spicy Jam Sauce from McDonalds feels very similar to something I had before, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.
It tasted good, and I definitely enjoyed it.
Flavor wise, it was definitely very sweet, but also having a mild type of spice. You could feel your mouth warming up and having a bit of a tingling sensation, and you also could feel the effects of the Szechuan Peppercorns (although in a lot more milder nature).
But even then, the spice and heat level wasn’t that bad.
Honestly, on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the least spiciest and 10 being the most, I would say the new Sweet & Spicy Jam Sauce was only a 5 on spice. It was more sweet than spicy if anything.
But it worked well with the Chicken McNugget as it didn’t overpower it, and you could still taste the essence of the chicken in all its glory.
I also grabbed some French fries to try it out with as well, and it also tasted very good.
Although in my opinion, I think the Chicken McNuggets were a better pairing item for the sauce, the fries were still pretty decent.
Then it suddenly came to me.
This was basically a sweet and sour sauce but made spicy.
Yes, McDonalds has literally just made a Spicy Sweet and Sour Sauce!
That was definitely interesting.
How Can Sweet & Spicy Jam Sauce Be Improved
Honestly, I was not expecting the sauce to taste like a Spicier version of a Sweet and Sour, but it was good.
The only thing I would say is maybe make the sauce a bit more spicier, because right now it’s more sweet than spicy.
Like the McDonald’s Mambo Sauce which we tried earlier, that had the perfect level of spice. If you took that same level of spice and put it in the Sweet & Spicy Jam Sauce, I can definitely see it being a major hit among the fan base.
Other than that, it’s a really good sauce that works well with the items.
Overall Thoughts
With that being said, McDonalds Sweet & Spicy Jam Sauce was definitely an interesting thing to try.
According to McDonald’s, the Sweet & Spicy Jam Sauce pairs really well with breakfast items like the Hash Browns, Sausage McMuffin with Egg, and many other things.
But in my opinion, I think it works best with the Chicken McNuggets.
It’s like eating Sweet and Sour Chicken, but with a bit of spice!
Either way, Great Job McDonald’s.
