To start off the new year on a sweet note, Sonic has released their Peanut Butter Bacon Shake! This shake is available only for a limited time from January 8th to February 4th, so if you are looking to satisfy your sweet tooth cravings then this is something you definitely can not pass on!
One interesting bit of information is that most folks and even Sonic’s employees refer to this product as a “new” item, however I recall that this shake was originally released back in 2013!
I guess since it has been over a decade since it was released, it can still be introduced as a new item.
I believe Sonic is the only major fast food restaurant in the United States to release a desert shake that advertises bacon as one of its toppings. To many folks this type of combination may sound a bit outlandish but I would not advise hating the concept before trying it out for yourselves.
So let’s go get our hands on this limited time shake!
Buying Sonic’s Peanut Butter Bacon Shake
As with any fast food restaurants, you can order Sonic’s Peanut Butter Bacon Shake online through Sonic’s website, app, or through other delivery options like uber eats and door dash. You can also just swing by one of the many Sonic locations and pick up your shake in person.
The Sonic by my house looked very calm outside as their drive thru only had 2 cars in line, and about 2 more cars (including mine) were waiting in one of those kiosks. I am guessing inside must have been extremely backed up as I could see four or five employees just scrambling all around and past each other.
It took about 10 minutes after pushing the red button that I had someone speak to me from the intercom to take my order. I was not feeling too daring so I decided to just order a small shake. After waiting about 10 more minutes I paid the total $4.75 with tax and was on my way home.
Lets see if our shake looked better in person, in comparison to the commercial.
How Does Sonic’s Peanut Butter Bacon Shake Look Like
Honestly at first glance Sonic’s Peanut Butter Bacon Shake reminded me of an abstract art piece. You definitely do not expect to see any salty or tart items on your soft serve shake, but those relatively large reddish-brown pieces of bacon are smack dab on top.
You can see the soft serve infused with the peanut butter. While you can not see the peanut butter itself, its presence can definitely be felt through that strong peanut butter scent just overflowing its container and the whole area surrounding it.
The whip cream topping is always a nice touch for display purposes.
All of the components of this shake look very visually appealing and the cherry on top (pun-intended) is that, well there is an actual cherry on top of your shake surrounded by the delicious bacon!
It might seem like a general design to put “a cherry on top”, but it is important to note that the cherry on my shake was downright impeccable. From the solid reddish tint to the fact that it looked super plump without any sign of bruising.
Beauty aside, let’s dive straight into how the shake actually tastes!
How Does Sonic’s Peanut Butter Bacon Shake Taste Like
After finding out Sonic was going to finally bring back their Peanut Butter Bacon Shake, I was looking forward to the first taste so much so that I went the unconventional route and decided to eat a piece of bacon from the top!
Let me tell you, that bacon was so crispy, so crunchy, so flavorful, and absolutely fried to perfection.
That kind of bacon felt like it belonged on some of the top tier burgers, but alas we were getting ready to see how that flavorful and crispy bacon flavor would do on a soft serve.
Before I could get to that combination, I decided to stick a straw straight down the center to see I could actually differentiate the flavors before blending it all together. The very first thing I tasted was the whip cream and it was exactly how sweet I would like it to be.
Maybe it is just me but I feel that Sonic uses a light variation of whipped cream as it is never overly sweet, rather it is much milder in comparison to many other fast food chains and even some of the grocery store chains that sell whipped cream.
The next taste to hit my pallet was the soft serve which was very finely blended in with peanut butter. The blend itself was very smooth and silky.
I never once came across a grainy bite at any point. I figured maybe the peanut butter might clump up and form tiny pebbles, but no the entire time it was a very fine and creamy taste throughout.
Finally it was time to break some of the bacon into tiny pieces and blend the entire shake again. The next sip was such a wonderful balance of sweet and savory flavors, it would make anyone just close their eyes for one minute just forget about any other problems or dilemmas.
The deeper I got into eating Sonic’s Peanut Butter Bacon Shake, I was pleasantly surprised to find even bigger pieces of crunchy bacon! Right along with finishing the cherry which was more sweet than tart, this very likely was one the best soft serves shakes I have had in quite some time.
As I mentioned it is one the best but not that absolute best shake that I have ever had, which means there is always room for adjustments or improvements.
How Can Sonic’s Peanut Butter Bacon Shake Be Improved
To be frank, this is one of those items where each ingredient works really well with each other. Perhaps Sonic can consider making another variation which involves a slight swirl of caramel on top? Maybe Sonic can consider bringing the shake back this summer!
Overall Thoughts
Let’s be clear on one thing, anyone that is watching their carbs or overall calories is not coming to order these glorious shakes. Maybe they could also consider adding a different fruit topping as opposed to a cherry, like a fresh strawberry or even a blue berry. Remember you can always order a mini size which is the smallest size available.
On that same note, they are unfortunately missing out on one the best soft serve shakes available to offer both sweet and savory sensations!
I would definitely recommend giving this shake a try as it is only here for a limited time.
