Taco Bell is one of the most creative fast food chains around as they are always trying to invent something new to add to the menu. And this time around, they created an item called the Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries for people to try.
Seeing as how their Nacho Fries were already one of my most favorite items ever, this peaked my interest.
I have gotten the Nacho Fries by themselves many times as those fries are perfectly seasoned and super crispy to eat. But this new version apparently has a bunch of sauce as well as cheese grilled on top of it! That to me sounds like a genius thing to do!
And because we here at Food Senpai love to eat and try new foods, you know we are definitely going to be reviewing Taco Bell’s Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries!
What Is Taco Bell’s Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries
So according to the website, you can get the Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries in a few different varieties:
- Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries – Beef
- Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries – Beef, Spicy
- Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries – Steak
- Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries – Steak, Spicy
So as you can see, there are 4 different varieties that you can pick between.
As for the common ingredients, the Taco Bell’s Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries features Three-Cheese Blend, Nacho Cheese Sauce, Chipotle Sauce, Seasoned Fries, and your choice of Beef or Steak and also spicy or non spicy versions.
Which as you can see, this seems like a really simple item to make as it utilizes all of Taco Bell’s common ingredients to make something new.
I just hope it delivers in flavor because this definitely looks really interesting.
Buying The Taco Bell’s Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries
Immediately after hearing about this new item being released, I got into my car and drove to the nearest Taco Bell location I could find.
And being as how it was Taco Bell, the lines in the drive-thru was super jam packed. It also didn’t help that it was lunch time which means hungry workers coming during their break to get food.
It took about 6 minutes before I was able to drive up to the speaker and place my order. I looked at the menu and there it was, Taco Bell was advertising the new Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries in a huge picture that took up half the entire menu which was a cool thing to see.
I saw that you can get it in either the steak or beef version and also spicy or non spicy. So I opted for the regular steak non spicy version of the Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries.
I then drove to the window to pay and my total cost came out to around $4.99, which did seem a bit expensive but hopefully it tastes good.
After paying, I waited for around 3 minutes before they handed me my bag and it was off to the races.
I parked my car in the nearest parking space I could find and it was time to do the review!
What Does Taco Bell’s Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries Look Like
Taking the item out of the bag, I noticed that the Taco Bell’s Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries came in a box that was typically used for serving up the Mexican Pizza. Which was pretty interesting, as this made me feel like there was going to be quite a bit of food inside.
I opened the box and saw that they had used a paper sheet to fold on top of the fries, which I think was because of how they grilled the cheese onto the nacho fries.
Opening the paper sheet up to take a look at the Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries, I was absolutely shocked.
This did not look like anything I saw in the advertisement, pictures, commercials or anything.
It looked terrible as I felt whoever made my order literally just rushed as fast as they could and threw it all together before handing it to me.
In fact, if you look closely at it, there is barely any Nacho Fries! This item costed around $4.99, so I expected a lot more fries but I literally see like less than a handful of fries laying around. Plus, where was the grilled cheese aspect of it?
I see a bunch of sauce covering the fries which was nice, and also there was a good amount of steak. But they really skimped out on the grilled cheese which was barely even there, and there was barely any fries.
Presentation wise, this did not look good. But I still had high hopes for it, so hopefully the flavor was there and it tastes better than it looks.
What Does Taco Bell’s Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries Taste Like
I used my fork to grab a few pieces of everything, a little bit of Nacho Fries, some Steak and also some cheese and sauce all together and took a bite.
First impressions I had to say it was very underwhelming.
The Nacho Fries themselves had good flavor, the seasoning was on point as it was a bit cheesy and soft. But the outer layer was completely mushy. There was no ounce of crispy sensations to the fries at all, it was just mush after mush.
Plus, they added way too much sauce which meant that whenever I was taking a bite, it felt like I was just eating sauce. I could barely feel the essence of the Nacho Fries which was a bit sad. Don’t get me wrong, the sauce tasted good as it had a bit of a smoky feel, good cheesy sensation with a bit of spice.
But I just feel like there was TOO much sauce that it overwhelmed the dish.
Not to mention, the Grilled Cheese that was suppose to be on the Nacho Fries was literally non-existent.
There was literally like a tiny sliver of Grilled Cheese that was actually there. But you could barely notice it as it wasn’t even completely grilled. If you weren’t actually looking for it, you honestly wouldn’t even have noticed it was there.
And what really got me was the steak.
That steak was overcooked, dry and flavorless. It felt like some old meat that’s been sitting out for quite a while just hastily tossed into the box to get rid of it.
When you put everything together, the Nacho Fries, the Nacho Cheese Sauce, the Chipotle Sauce, the Steak and also the Grilled Cheese, it made it very confusing to eat.
Honestly, I would have preferred if they just added the items separately where its just Nacho Fries with some dipping sauces on the side and steak in a cup as well. That to me sounds a lot better as this version that they are serving just isn’t up to par.
How Can Taco Bell’s Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries Be Improved
Usually Taco Bell delivers in most of the items that they create, however this Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries really didn’t live up to the hype.
And I get the idea, and I can totally see it working. It’s just the workers have to put more care and love into making the dish.
For paying $4.99 and I get served something like this is definitely not something you would want to see.
The only way to make this dish better was if the workers actually took their time into making this, made sure the Nacho Fries were fresh and crispy, adding a bit of sauce without drowning out the flavors. Also the steak needs to be made fresh and actually seasoned well.
But the star of the show which was the Grilled Cheese needs to actually be present in the dish. Like, I want to see an actual blanket of Grilled Cheese covering the entirety of the fries. That to me would make the dish a lot better.
Because as it is right now, this is not a Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries. This is just Nacho Fries covered in sauce.
Overall Thoughts
At the end of the day, I can definitely see the idea and route that Taco Bell was planning on taking.
However, the execution was just not good.
If they retrained the workers on how to properly make this item, then I can definitely see it being a hit in the future. But as it is right now where it is just sloppily thrown together, this is not a good look and anybody who buys it will not be pleased.
I had high hopes for Taco Bell’s Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries, but after seeing this, I’m not sure anymore.
Overall Rating: 4.0
Taco Bell needs to take this back to the drawing board and fix a lot of things.
